The slow death march back to the office after the holidays is a drag, isn’t it? If the workplace you left before the holidays is the same workplace you entered in the New Year, maybe now is the time to start your hunt for a new job. But is it the best time to look?
The answer, friend, is yes, yes, it is. Here’s why:
It is fairly common to trudge through your workday, mumbling to passersby, “Working hard, or hardly workin’, amiright?” without taking the time and energy to reflect on whether this job is the right fit for you.
But as soon as you had a few days extra to rest, the contrast between Work You and Free You became more apparent. Lean into that. Your job should bring you a degree of satisfaction in life, but if you’re bored or burnt out in your current role, maybe it’s time for a change. Before the routine of surviving work takes over again, pause for a few undistracted hours to reflect on your career goals, write down your thoughts and feelings, and assess whether now is the time to go in a different direction.
The concept of “quiet quitting” emerged during the early days of the pandemic as burnt out, stressed out, and overwhelmed workers downshifted into survival mode. Many people never resurfaced to higher levels of job satisfaction and productivity. In fact, a recent Gallup survey found that at least half of the U.S. workforce is quiet quitting.
If you’re putting in no more energy or effort in your job than is absolutely necessary, congratulations, you are a quiet quitter. It’s completely understandable! We have all been through some of the hardest years of our lives.
But quiet quitting is no way to live. We are made for work that is fulfilling, satisfying, and sustainable. If your job doesn’t fit that description, take the leap. It’s time to find a place that can give you a renewed sense of purpose.
Speaking of new vision, there’s another reason now is a great time to look for a job. Many organizations begin their new year casting vision and setting goals. They return to work renewed from the holidays and ready to conquer the world.
They also refresh their hiring budgets. The start of a new year is the perfect time to see what’s out there and whether you could make a new start in an energetic and inspiring work environment.
Despite inflation and recession fears, at the end of November, there were still 10.5 million job openings in the United States. Managers are still hiring. Businesses still need quality help. The job market is strong. Opportunities are calling to you. Seize the day!
