ArcelorMittal Tubular Products (AMTP) in Shelby, Ohio produces welded and seamless precision tubes in a wide spectrum of carbon and alloy grades and offers one of the most extensive size ranges in the world. Our tubular products serve a variety of markets including automotive, industrial and construction equipment, hydraulic cylinders, agricultural equipment, and mineral mining equipment. 

Your role

The Health & Safety Specialist will report to the Health & Safety Superintendent and be responsible for identifying, promoting, and completing health and safety initiatives throughout the Plants. Working both independently and together with Plant Leadership, they will create a safe workplace environment. Using knowledge of OSHA standards, State and Local regulations, and corporate requirements, the Health and Safety Specialist will provide regular guidance, support, and knowledge to address hazards reacting to facilitate a reduction or elimination of the risk. Exhibit self-motivation and ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment with complex operations. 

Main tasks of the Health & Safety Specialist

  • Support implementation of and oversee H&S Program meeting ISO 45001 & Corporate Fatality Prevention Standard (FPS) requirements.
  • Participate in internal & external ISO 45001 and FPS audits.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA standards and other state and local regulations and requirements.
  • Drive injury and fatality prevention through HIRA activities. 
  • Lead or assist in completing various internal safety projects.
  • Drive Root Cause Analysis, track open items and ensure closure.
  • Maintain/schedule required regulatory inspections related to departmental and site emergency response equipment.
  • Continuously monitor the Plant work environment and inspect equipment/facilities for hazards and safety violations and recommend safety features/devices to protect workers from injury.
  • Effectively maintain documented Risk Assessments and assist with risk reduction strategies for identified areas of improvement.
  • Develop and maintain Health and Safety procedures and train affected employees.
  • Develop procedures and processes to ensure compliance to OSHA and FPS safety standards including working at heights, isolation, cranes and lifting, electrical safety, machine guarding, HIRA, incident investigations, shop floor audits, contractor management, vehicles and driving, confined space, and emergency preparedness and response.
  • Develop and/or coordinate / deliver employee safety training programs and effectively maintain and control training records.
  • Assist with New Hire Orientation.
  • Facilitate and participate in monthly Safety Committees, Safety Tour, and Management Review. 
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with employees to develop, implement, and drive health and safety cultural improvements.
  • Facilitate and assist with emergency responses and drills.
  • Document, follow up, and follow through with corrective actions for identified unsafe conditions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety or related discipline, or a combination of post-secondary education that includes applicable professional certifications and training in occupational health and safety and 5+ years related experience in a manufacturing environment. 
  • Strong understanding of OSHA and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Industrial knowledge of processes and/or equipment, related hazards, and mitigation strategies. 
  • Ability and desire to obtain continued education, certification, and training. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Excel, Teams, Word, Power Point, Access).
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently with minimal experience. 
  • Strong verbal, written, and persuasive skills.
  • Demonstrates strong decision making analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to competently handle a fast-paced environment, with strong organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills.
  • Demonstrates leadership, confidence, and fosters positive relationships.
  • Willing and able to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Ability to travel to support learning initiatives.
